MANAGER: MARITIME

Applications are invited for the position of the Manager Maritime based at La Mercy. The successful applicants will be reporting to the Maritime and Econometrics Executive Manager. Background: The Moses Kotane Institute (MKI) is looking to appoint an experienced and suitably qualified South African Citizens to fill the exciting position of a Maritime Manager. The Position will be responsible for managing maritime programs, projects, and activities in line with MKI strategy and annual operational plans. Minimum Requirements: Applicants must have a valid Master’s degree in Maritime Studies or related NQF level 9 qualification; from an accredited tertiary institution. Minimum 5-years maritime research or maritime economics/development related experience, 3 of which should be at management level. A Valid driver’s license. A PHD would be an added advantage Core competencies: Knowledge of Labour Legislation, Good knowledge of implementing targeted outreach programs, Ability to manage complex data and produce meaningful insights, Financial acumen, Strong relationship building and stakeholder management skills, Ability to get up to speed with new processes/procedures and able to adapt readily to change, Ability to work in cross-functional projects/teams, Excellent co-ordination and project management and Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and/or Project). Responsibilities: Provide input into the development of the sub-unit’s operational strategic plan and implementation thereof; Develop, review, and implement policies relevant to the operations of the sub-unit; Manage maritime projects, including but not limited to curriculum design and development; Manage research initiatives within the unit; Liaise and maintain sound relationships with industry and sponsors; Manage stakeholder requirements to ensure that it is well understood, documented, and constantly revised Terms of Appointment: The incumbent to the above position will be offered a Permanent position with remuneration at DPSA level 12. Applications are invited for the position of the Research Maritime Development Practitioner based at La Mercy. The successful applicant will be reporting to the Maritime Manager. Background: The Moses Kotane Institute (MKI) is looking to appoint an experienced and suitably qualified South African Citizens to fill the position of a Maritime Development Practitioner. The Position will be responsible for implementation of Maritime Research and Development Programmes. Minimum Requirements: Applicants must have a valid Honor’s degree in Maritime Studies or related NQF level 8 qualification from an accredited tertiary institution; Minimum 3 years experience in the maritime field or maritime research and/ enterprise development; A Valid driver’s license. A Master’s Degree would be an added advantage Core competencies: Knowledge of maritime concepts, practices, and procedures, Good co-ordination and project management skills, Ability to work independently, accurately and to problem solve; Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills, Proactive; Planning & Organising Skills. The Institute is looking for two external members of the Moses Kotane Institute’s Research Ethics Committee.
Background: The Moses Kotane Institute (MKI) conducts business/action research that responds to the needs of the provincial economy. We are currently seeking for two experienced professionals to form part of the Research Ethics Committee. Minimum Requirements: A doctoral qualification (we will take one with social science and another with applied science). Minimum of 3 years in serving as an Ethics Committee member for research purposes in tertiary institutions in KwaZulu-Natal. Have time available to attend meetings as and when required. Core competencies: Assessment skills, including the ability to analyse uncertainty. Process skills including the ability to facilitate, communicate and document. Interpersonal skills including the ability to listen and ask questions and foster effective communication amongst parties. In addition, have knowledge competencies including moral reasoning, understanding of policies and procedures, understand cultural dynamics and adhere to professional codes of ethics. Role of the Committee: To protect potential participants in research considering risks and benefits for the community in which research is carried out. Promote high ethical standards including respecting the dignity, rights, safety and well being of participants. Investigate issues that include misrepresentation, falsification, and fabrication of data, promote the truth to minimise error. Issue an ethical clearance report. Purpose of the job: Through it’s Research and Development Unit the MKI seeks to conduct world class research. To this end it is critical that superior standards of research processes are maintained. The MKI Research Ethics Committee will be responsible for reviewing proposals and terms of references (TOR’s) that will address research ethical matters. Minimum Requirements: Applicants must have a completed a PhD in Science/ Social Science/ Public Policy/ IT and other related fields. Five (5) years’ experience in conducting and reviewing research. Five (5) years’ experience in research ethics. Must have an impressive publication record (minimum of 5 peer reviewed journal articles). A Valid driver’s license & own transport. Remuneration: DPSA Level 13 (1) Duration: 24 months contract Core competencies: Excellent writing and communication skills. General professionalism in all areas. Responsibilities: The Moses Kotane Research Ethics Committee (REC) will be responsible for the following:- Ensure that the rights of research participants are always protected;
- Ensure that the proposals are treated with respect and confidentiality;
- Conduct a thorough review of the research Terms of References (ToRs; Conduct ethics review in a wholly independent and impartial manner without any conflicts of interest and with a focus clearly on the ethics of research proposals;
- Where the REC feels that it does not have the expertise to review a proposal, it should seek the help of independent bodies or external members. RECs should ensure that they fulfil their role and responsibilities with integrity and record their decisions and feedback in a transparent manner.

The Moses Kotane Institute (MKI) is an entity of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government through the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), with a mandate to conduct world class research into training, skills development, and provincial strategic economic sectors and to strategically lead on innovation and maritime coordination and implementation activities to respond to the needs of provincial economy. The Moses Kotane Institute invites suitable service providers to submit proposals for the development of operationalisation business case for KwaZulu-Natal Innovation Hub. Terms of reference are available on MKI’s website: www.moseskotaneinstitute.com. Proposals must be emailed to tenders@moseskotane.com by 1 March 2021, 23:59. Proposals received after the closing date will NOT be considered. MKI subscribes to the Preferential Procurement Policy Framework Act, 2000, (Act No.5 of 2000) and bids will be evaluated in terms of PPPFA provisions. The Moses Kotane Institute (MKI) is an entity of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government through the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), with a mandate to conduct world class research into training, skills development, and provincial strategic economic sectors and to strategically lead on innovation and maritime coordination and implementation activities to respond to the needs of provincial economy. MKI invites individuals, academics, experts who hold PhDs or post-doctoral status, and who are knowledgeable in the following sectors: Maritime, Oceans economy, Manufacturing (with specific focus on automotive, electronics, chemical, leather/footwear, clothing & textile, renewable energy, agri-processing & food subsectors), Information and communication technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Agriculture, Tourism, Environment, Rural economy and Township economy, to be part of Research Quality Assurance and Review Panel. The Moses Kotane Institute (MKI) is an entity of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government through the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), with a mandate to conduct world class research into training, skills development, and provincial strategic economic sectors and to strategically lead on innovation and maritime coordination and implementation activities to respond to the needs of provincial economy. The Moses Kotane Institute invites suitably qualified and competent firms of attorneys to send proposals to be considered for inclusion on its panel of attorneys as ‘preferred service providers’. The panel of attorneys will be required to provide Intellectually Property (IP) legal services to MKI, on an ad hoc basis.
