INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR: RESEARCH SPECIALIST - STATISTICIAN

Background:  The Moses Kotane Institute (MKI) is looking to engage the services of an experienced and suitably qualified Independent Contractor who is a South African Citizen to fill the above role. Minimum Requirements:  Interested candidates must have a master’s degree in Statistics or related data analytics fields at NQF Level 09 from an accredited tertiary institution. (A PhD degree will be an advantage). Minimum 5 years experience in statistics or econometrics conducting research, data analysis and reporting. Demonstrated ability to work with large datasets, with strong analytical & critical thinking skills. Must have the ability to collect, organize, analyse, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy. Driver’s license. Core competencies:    Knowledge of statistical software packages, a basic programming language such as Python and Stata, demonstrate high attention to detail, ensuring the accuracy of work completed, good co-ordination and project management skills, ability to understand and apply specified field and/or survey research procedures and protocols, above-average oral and written communication, developing relationships, technical and professional knowledge/skills, project management skills and accuracy. Responsibilities: Brief Expected Outputs:  (inter alia): Develop research protocols, assessments, and evaluation tools, Research Project Coordination, Collect Data, Analyse Data, Design and write research proposals for project approval, Co-ordinate pilot projects/feasibility studies as and when required, Develop research standards and mentor junior researchers, Maintain, and enhance academic partnerships with academic institutions and prepare for and engage in conference papers. Collaborate with team members to translate research data into infographics. Terms of Appointment:           The successful candidate will be contracted over a period of 9 (nine) months. To this end, MKI is looking to engage the services of TEN professionals with relevant expertise to form part of this crucial project. Minimum Requirements:   Interested candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences/Commerce or related fields at NQF Level 08 from an accredited tertiary institution. Three years’ experience in the development of Masterplans. Three years’ experience in the SMME sector; Five years’ experience in policy development and analysis. Successful candidates will be expected to enter a 12-month contract and will receive a monthly stipend.

REQUIREMENTS MKI Bursary recipient pursuing a Masters / PHD in Science & Related fields. Research Practitioner: Maritime Development

BACKGROUND:   The Moses Kotane Institute (MKI) is looking to appoint an experienced and suitably qualified South African Citizens to fill the position of a Maritime Development Practitioner. The Position will be responsible for implementation of Maritime Research and Development Programmes.. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  Applicants must have a valid Honour’s degree in Maritime Studies or related NQF level 8 qualification from an accredited tertiary institution; Minimum 3 years maritime research and/or maritime industry experience.  A Valid driver’s license. A Master’s Degree would be an added advantage. The Institute is looking for two external members of the Moses Kotane Institute’s Research Ethics Committee.   Background:    The Moses Kotane Institute (MKI) conducts business/action research that responds to the needs of the provincial economy. We are currently seeking for two experienced professionals to form part of the Research Ethics Committee. Minimum Requirements:        A doctoral qualification (we will take one with social science and another with applied science). Minimum of 3 years in serving as an Ethics Committee member for research purposes in tertiary institutions in KwaZulu-Natal. Have time available to attend meetings as and when required. Core competencies:                 Assessment skills, including the ability to analyse uncertainty. Process skills including the ability to facilitate, communicate and document. Interpersonal skills including the ability to listen and ask questions and foster effective communication amongst parties. In addition, have knowledge competencies including moral reasoning, understanding of policies and procedures, understand cultural dynamics and adhere to professional codes of ethics.  Role of the Committee:            To protect potential participants in research considering risks and benefits for the community in which research is carried out. Promote high ethical standards including respecting the dignity, rights, safety and well being of participants. Investigate issues that include misrepresentation, falsification, and fabrication of data, promote the truth to minimise error. Issue an ethical clearance report. The Moses Kotane Institute (MKI) is looking to appoint an experienced and suitably qualified South African Citizen to provide services as an Independent Contractor: Company Secretary to serve the MKI Board.   Minimum Requirements:     A governance qualification as at NQF Level 8 (Honours/Degree and Post Graduate Diploma/ LLB and an Admission as a Legal Practitioner). Registration with the Chartered Governance Institute of South Africa. At least 5 years’ experience in a compliance and administration role. A valid driver’s license and have access to own transport. Responsibilities:
  1. Provide Board members with guidance as to their duties, responsibilities, and powers.
  2. Make the Board aware of any law relevant to the company.
  3. Report any failures on the part of the company or Directors to comply with the Memorandum of Incorporation, Companies Act and the PFMA
  4. Certify company’s audited financial statements whether the company has filed required returns and notices in terms of the Act, and whether all such returns and notices appear to be true, correct and up to date. Ensure that a copy of the company’s financial statements is sent to every person who is entitled to it in terms of Company’s Act.
  5. Annual returns and update company information on CIPC, including director changes and company related information.
  6. Carry out functions of a person who is responsible for the company compliance with the filing of annual returns in terms of the Companies Act.
  7. Provide proper induction, orientation, and ongoing training for Board members.
  8. Ensure that all terms of reference / committee charters are kept up to date.
  9. Draft yearly plans in consultation with the Chairperson of the Board.
  10. Ensure proceeding of the board and committee meetings are properly recorded, and that minutes are circulated as prescribed by the Act, after approval of the chairperson of the board or relevant board committee.
  11. Obtain appropriate responses and feedback to specific agenda items and matters arising from committee deliberations.
  12. Assist with yearly evaluation of the board, its individual directors and senior management.
  13. Provide information to internal and external auditors as may be requested from time to time.
  14. Perform any other tasks or attend any other meeting arising from Board deliberations.
  Term and Remuneration:     Available immediately, 12 (renewable for 2 further 12 months terms, based on performance on each term). Equivalent DPSA Level 12 salary.
