Incorporation
The Institute was established in 2007 by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs as the South African National Liberation Institute of Technology, Philosophy and Political Science (SANLITPPS). It was incorporated formally as the Moses Kotane Research Institute in 2009 as a non-profit company, registered in terms of the Companies Act of 2008 and started operating in 2010. It is an agency of the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government mandated to conduct research and promote innovation, training and skills development that responds to the needs of the provincial economy, through collaboration and coordination. The legal identity of the Institute has changed to the Moses Kotane Research Institute since the passing of the KwaZulu-Natal Moses Kotane Research Institute Act 3 of 2024, as gazetted on the 24th of May 2024.
