Background: The Moses Kotane Institute is an entity of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government through the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA), with a mandate to conduct world class research into training, skills development, and provincial strategic economic sections; and to strategically lead in innovation and maritime co-ordination and implementation activities to respond to the needs of the provincial economy. The institution seeks to appoint experienced and qualifying individuals, as Independent Contractor Researchers in its Maritime Unit.  Applications are invited from South African Citizens, residing in KwaZulu-Natal.

Requirements: A Master’s Degree in International Trade / Maritime Economics / Maritime. A PhD qualification will be an added advantage.

Experience: 5 years’ relevant Research experience (compulsory)

Duration: 3 years – Project specific – to be agreed upon appointment for each project.

Specific Expertise: Research, Maritime and Economics

Skills: Excellent research project management, ability to use spreadsheet effectively, ability to manipulate and manage complex data and produce meaningful insights, work independently with minimal managerial supervision, good coordination skills, multi-tasking and work well under pressure, high attention to detail, good communication and administration skills, problem solving and goal oriented.

Responsibilities: Draft research proposals and gain approval for research methodology prior to commencing research.

Source data and conduct relevant analysis of data.

Provide the outcome of the research including a summary of the findings.

Make preliminary recommendations as a result of the research.

Develop benchmarks as a result of the research.

Suggest follow-up research as a result of research findings.

Present research finding on both internal and external platforms.

Consult with relevant publication agencies for publication of research.
